Online backup is very practical. But can it offer privacy? Can a doctor backup patient files online? Should you backup your digital life online? With these questions in mind we developed the Offline Private Key Protocol. The protocol requires that the private (decryption) key should be stored away from the ’source’ computer. As a result, the private key needs to be fairly large to be secure: a 4096 bits RSA key should suffice for at least 30 years.

But 4096 bits is about 800 characters… how would you store that offline for a long time, properly? Safeberg (an ILUMY venture) introduces a machine readable paper key, with a 4k bits key crammed in a giant 2D Datamatrix barcode. The paper key can be stored in a drawer, deposit box or safe. To use the key, a picture taken from a camera or mobile phone will do.

Here’s an interesting discussion re the paper key on Slashdot. We created a video about key length and how we got to printing an RSA key on paper (thanks Menno and Irad). And this video shows how the backup key can be used.

By the way, Safeberg is ultimate security AND ultimate speed AND ultimate ease of use AND affordable AND transparent pricing.

Now, go get your free 5Gigs of storage at Safeberg.

Today we’re launching Milk or Sugar. Milk or sugar? All things customized.

Initially to serve our research and curiosity, we built a database of websites where you can customize and order products online. We added reviews and the database became a site, offering the best places to go for your built to order sleeping bag, samurai sword, bicycle, skate board, scrabble board, watch, machine parts, perfume, lingerie, wallpaper or lego model. And soon, your built to order fire extinguisher, guitar, radio controlled car, protein shakes or kanu.

Is mass customization finally becoming a reality?

Enjoy: www.milkorsugar.com
